yat tu kāmepsunā karma sāhaṁkāreṇa vā punaḥ kriyate bahulāyāsaṁ tad rājasam udāhṛtam
"But action performed with desire for fruits, or with egoism, or with much effort—that is declared to be rajasic."
What This Means:
Rajasic action is done to get something you want, with a sense of 'I'm doing this,' and requires lots of strain and struggle. It's effortful, ego-driven action.
Going Deeper:
'Kamepsuna' - desire for results drives the action. 'Sahamkara' - performed with ego, 'I am the doer.' 'Bahulayasa' - requires excessive effort, suggesting force rather than flow. Rajasic action may achieve worldly results but exhausts the doer and creates karmic bonds. The struggle and strain indicate resistance to natural flow.
How To Apply This:
Notice when work feels like a struggle. Is ego driving? Are you forcing outcomes? Are you exhausting yourself? This signals rajasic mode - consider stepping back.
