pṛthaktvena tu yaj jñānaṁ nānā-bhāvān pṛthag-vidhān vetti sarveṣu bhūteṣu taj jñānaṁ viddhi rājasam
"But that knowledge which sees in all beings various distinct entities of different kinds as separate from one another—know that knowledge to be rajasic."
What This Means:
Rajasic knowledge sees only differences and separateness. It perceives many distinct types of beings but misses the underlying unity connecting them all.
Going Deeper:
Rajasic knowledge is accurate at the empirical level but incomplete. It sees 'nana-bhava' (many essences) and 'prithag-vidha' (different kinds) - the diversity of creation. This knowledge enables worldly success and classification but maintains the sense of separation that causes competition, conflict, and suffering. It's not wrong, just partial.
How To Apply This:
Notice when you're categorizing and separating people into groups ('us vs them'). This is useful for some purposes but incomplete. Ask: what do we share?
