adeśa-kāle yad dānam apātrebhyaś ca dīyate asatkṛtam avajñātaṁ tat tāmasam udāhṛtam
"Charity given at wrong place and time, to unworthy recipients, disrespectfully, and contemptuously—that is declared tamasic."
What This Means:
Tamasic charity is given at inappropriate times and places, to unworthy recipients, without respect, even with contempt. This damages both giver and receiver.
Going Deeper:
Marks of tamasic charity: (1) 'adeśa-kāle'—wrong place and time (inappropriate context). (2) 'Apātrebhyaḥ'—to unworthy recipients (those who will misuse). (3) 'Asatkṛtam'—without proper respect/ceremony. (4) 'Avajñātam'—with contempt. Throwing money at someone insultingly or supporting harmful causes is tamasic.
How To Apply This:
Giving that humiliates the recipient, supports harmful behavior, or is done carelessly can cause more harm than good. Think about where your charity goes and how you give. Respect the recipient.
