yat tu pratyupakārārthaṁ phalam uddiśya vā punaḥ dīyate ca parikliṣṭaṁ tad dānaṁ rājasaṁ smṛtam
"But charity given with expectation of reciprocation, or looking for fruit, or given grudgingly—that is considered rajasic."
What This Means:
Rajasic charity is given expecting something in return, hoping for some benefit, or given reluctantly with inner resistance. The giving is real but the heart is mixed.
Going Deeper:
Marks of rajasic charity: (1) 'pratyupakāra-artham'—for reciprocation (I'll give to you, you give to me). (2) 'Phalam uddiśya'—looking for fruit/results. (3) 'Parikliṣṭam'—grudgingly, with difficulty/pain. This is transactional or reluctant giving. Better than not giving, but spiritually limited.
How To Apply This:
Notice if you give expecting return favors, or calculate what you'll get, or give reluctantly. This is common—don't condemn yourself, but gradually cultivate purer motivation. Joy in giving is the goal.
