Chapter 14: The Three Gunas

10 / 27
Gita 14.10
रजस्तमश्चाभिभूय सत्त्वं भवति भारत। रजः सत्त्वं तमश्चैव तमः सत्त्वं रजस्तथा॥

rajas tamaś cābhibhūya sattvaṁ bhavati bhārata rajaḥ sattvaṁ tamaś caiva tamaḥ sattvaṁ rajas tathā

"Sattva arises overpowering rajas and tamas, O Bharata; rajas overpowering sattva and tamas; and likewise tamas overpowering sattva and rajas."

What This Means:

The gunas compete with each other. Sometimes sattva dominates (you feel clear), sometimes rajas (you feel driven), sometimes tamas (you feel dull). They cycle and struggle for dominance.

Going Deeper:

The gunas are in constant flux: 'abhibhūya'—overpowering. At any moment, one guna rises by suppressing the other two. This explains mood swings, energy fluctuations, and changes in mental clarity. None stays permanently dominant in the bound soul. This constant change is itself part of bondage.

How To Apply This:

Track your energy throughout the day: morning clarity (sattva), midday activity (rajas), evening tiredness (tamas). Notice how your food, activities, and company affect which guna dominates. This awareness itself increases sattva.

Key Sanskrit Terms:

abhibhūya= overpoweringbhavati= arises, becomes dominant
