yathā sarva-gataṁ saukṣmyād ākāśaṁ nopalipyate sarvatrāvasthito dehe tathātmā nopalipyate
"As the all-pervading space is not tainted because of its subtlety, so the Self, seated everywhere in the body, is not tainted."
What This Means:
Just as space pervades everything but isn't stained by what's in it (smoke, dust, etc.) because of its subtlety, the Self pervades the body but isn't affected by bodily conditions.
Going Deeper:
Beautiful analogy: ākāśa (space) is sarva-gata (all-pervading) and due to saukṣmya (subtlety) is not upalipyate (tainted). Similarly, the ātmā, though 'sarvatra avasthita dehe' (stationed everywhere in the body), remains untainted. Space contains fire but isn't burned; contains water but isn't wet. Consciousness contains all experience but isn't modified by any.
How To Apply This:
When painful experiences arise in consciousness, remember: you are like space. The pain appears in you but doesn't touch what you essentially are. This isn't denial—it's perspective that allows compassionate response rather than reactive identification.
