Chapter 13: The Field & Knower

3 / 35
Gita 13.3
क्षेत्रज्ञं चापि मां विद्धि सर्वक्षेत्रेषु भारत। क्षेत्रक्षेत्रज्ञयोर्ज्ञानं यत्तज्ज्ञानं मतं मम॥

kṣetra-jñaṁ cāpi māṁ viddhi sarva-kṣetreṣu bhārata kṣetra-kṣetrajñayor jñānaṁ yat taj jñānaṁ mataṁ mama

"Know Me also as the knower of the field in all fields, O Bharata. The knowledge of field and field-knower—that I consider to be true knowledge."

What This Means:

Krishna reveals: 'I am the knower in all fields—in all bodies.' The same divine consciousness is the witness in every being. Understanding the distinction between field and knower is what Krishna calls 'true knowledge.'

Going Deeper:

This elevates the teaching: the individual knower (jiva) is ultimately one with the supreme Knower (Paramatman). 'Sarva-kshetreshu'—in ALL fields—means the same consciousness appears individualized in countless bodies. 'Yat tat jnanam'—that alone is knowledge. All other learning, however sophisticated, is secondary to this fundamental discrimination (viveka).

How To Apply This:

Recognize that the awareness looking through your eyes is the same awareness looking through all eyes. This recognition naturally generates compassion—how can you harm another 'you'?
