Gita 13.2
श्रीभगवानुवाच। इदं शरीरं कौन्तेय क्षेत्रमित्यभिधीयते। एतद्यो वेत्ति तं प्राहुः क्षेत्रज्ञ इति तद्विदः॥

śrī-bhagavān uvāca idaṁ śarīraṁ kaunteya kṣetram ity abhidhīyate etad yo vetti taṁ prāhuḥ kṣetra-jña iti tad-vidaḥ

"The Blessed Lord said: This body, O son of Kunti, is called the field; one who knows it is called the knower of the field by those who know."

What This Means:

Krishna gives a clear definition: your body is the 'field' (like a farmer's field where actions bear fruit), and the consciousness that knows the body is the 'knower of the field.' You are the knower, not the field.

Going Deeper:

The metaphor of 'kshetra' (field) is profound: a field is cultivated, produces crops (karma), and belongs to a farmer (the self). 'Tad-vidaḥ' (those who know) refers to the wise who understand this distinction. The body includes not just physical form but mind, senses, and emotions—all are 'field'; none are the true self.

How To Apply This:

Notice the difference between your body/mind and that which is aware of them. When you say 'my body hurts' or 'my mind is anxious,' who is the 'my' that possesses these? That witness is the knower.

Key Sanskrit Terms:

śarīram= bodykṣetram= fieldvetti= knowskṣetra-jñaḥ= knower of the field
