Paraphrase of Maitri Upaniṣad 1.2

"The sage said: "It has been said of old - this question about the truth of the Self is hard to understand.""

What This Means:

The sage acknowledged that questions about the Self are difficult and have been pondered since ancient times.

Going Deeper:

The difficulty lies not in the Self being obscure, but in the seeker being identified with what is not the Self.

How To Apply This:

The truth about yourself is both the simplest and most subtle thing to understand.
