ब्रह्म ह देवेभ्यो विजिग्ये तस्य ह ब्रह्मणो विजये देवा अमहीयन्त ॥

brahma ha devebhyo vijigye tasya ha brahmaṇo vijaye devā amahīyanta ||

"Brahman once won a victory for the gods. In that victory of Brahman, the gods became exalted."

What This Means:

This begins a famous story. The gods (devas) won a great battle, but it was really Brahman's power that won it. However, the gods didn't realize this — they thought they had won by their own strength.

Going Deeper:

This allegorical story illustrates how our individual powers (represented by gods like Agni, Vayu, Indra) are actually borrowed from Brahman, the ultimate source. Pride in personal achievement is ignorance of this truth.

How To Apply This:

When you succeed at something, notice the tendency to take full credit. Consider: where did your abilities come from? Your intelligence, energy, luck? Recognizing the ultimate source behind your powers cultivates humility.
