Kaushitaki Upanishad 3.10Famous
intermediate
न वाचं विजिज्ञासीत वक्तारं विद्यात्। न गन्धं विजिज्ञासीत घ्रातारं विद्यात्।
na vācaṃ vijijñāsīta vaktāraṃ vidyāt | na gandhaṃ vijijñāsīta ghrātāraṃ vidyāt |
"One should not try to know speech, but the speaker. One should not try to know smell, but the smeller."
What This Means:
Instead of getting lost in objects of experience, know the experiencer - the conscious subject.
Going Deeper:
This is the method of self-inquiry - turning attention from objects to the subject, from the known to the knower.
How To Apply This:
Turn your attention from what you experience to who experiences. Find the seer, not the seen.
