न प्राणेन नापानेन मर्त्यो जीवति कश्चन। इतरेण तु जीवन्ति यस्मिन्नेतावुपाश्रितौ॥
na prāṇena nāpānena martyo jīvati kaścana | itareṇa tu jīvanti yasminnetāvupāśritau ||
""No mortal lives by prana or apana. They live by something else, on which both these depend.""
What This Means:
Life doesn't come from breath alone. There's something deeper that both inhalation and exhalation depend on - that's what truly gives life.

Prana and apana are effects, not causes. The cause is the Atman, on which all vital functions depend.
