asuryā nāma te lokā andhena tamasāvṛtāḥ | tāṁs te pretyābhigacchanti ye ke cātmahano janāḥ ||
"Sunless are those worlds, covered in blinding darkness. To them go after death those who are slayers of the Self."
What This Means:
Those who ignore their true spiritual nature — who "kill" their awareness of the Self by identifying only with the body and ego — enter a state of spiritual darkness. This isn't about hell; it's about the natural consequence of ignorance.
Going Deeper:
Ātma-han (slayer of the Self) doesn't mean literal killing but ignoring, neglecting, or denying the inner Self. When we live as if we are only the body and mind, we condemn ourselves to confusion and suffering — the "sunless worlds" of ignorance.
How To Apply This:
Every time you get completely lost in material concerns and forget your deeper nature, you enter a "sunless world" — a state of anxious forgetting. Make time daily to reconnect with your inner Self through meditation, reflection, or prayer.
