ईशावास्यमिदं सर्वं यत्किञ्च जगत्यां जगत् । तेन त्यक्तेन भुञ्जीथा मा गृधः कस्यस्विद्धनम् ॥

īśāvāsyam idaṁ sarvaṁ yat kiñca jagatyāṁ jagat | tena tyaktena bhuñjīthā mā gṛdhaḥ kasya svid dhanam ||

"All this — whatever exists in this changing universe — should be covered by the Lord. Protect yourself through detachment. Do not covet, for whose is wealth?"

What This Means:

Everything in the world is pervaded by the Divine. When you see God in all things, you naturally become detached from selfish desires. Enjoy life, but don't grasp at possessions — they ultimately belong to no one.

Going Deeper:

This opening verse contains the entire teaching of the Upanishad. "Covered by the Lord" means seeing the Divine presence in every object and being. This vision transforms how we interact with the world — we enjoy without attachment, knowing that all belongs to the cosmic whole.

How To Apply This:

Before grabbing something for yourself today — food, attention, credit — pause and remember that everything is permeated by the same Divine presence. This awareness naturally loosens the grip of greed and allows you to enjoy life more freely.
