Chapter 13: The Field and the Knower
Krishna introduces the distinction between the "field" (kshetra), the body, mind, and all of matter, and the "knower of the field" (kshetrajna), the conscious Self that observes. This is Samkhya philosophy at its clearest: knowing who you really are versus what you merely experience.
Understanding this distinction is the beginning of liberation. You are not your body, not your thoughts, not your emotions, you are the awareness that knows all these.

Verse 13.1-2, Field and Knower
इदं शरीरं कौन्तेय क्षेत्रमित्यभिधीयते।
एतद्यो वेत्ति तं प्राहुः क्षेत्रज्ञ इति तद्विदः।।
idaṁ śarīraṁ kaunteya kṣetram ity abhidhīyate etad yo vetti taṁ prāhuḥ kṣetra-jña iti tad-vidaḥ
"This body, O Arjuna, is called the field. One who knows it is called the knower of the field by those who know."
The fundamental teaching: your body is a "field" (kshetra) in which experiences happen. But YOU are the knower (kshetrajna) who observes the field. The seer is different from the seen.
Verse 13.13, Brahman, the Knowable
ज्ञेयं यत्तत्प्रवक्ष्यामि यज्ज्ञात्वाऽमृतमश्नुते।
अनादिमत्परं ब्रह्म न सत्तन्नासदुच्यते।।
jñeyaṁ yat tat pravakṣyāmi yaj jñātvāmṛtam aśnute anādimat paraṁ brahma na sat tan nāsad ucyate
"I shall declare that which is to be known, knowing which one attains immortality. It is beginningless supreme Brahman, said to be neither existent nor non-existent."
Brahman transcends ordinary categories. It's not "existent" in the way objects exist, nor "non-existent" like a fantasy. It's beyond our usual dualistic categories, and knowing this brings immortality.
Verse 13.27, Equal in All
समं सर्वेषु भूतेषु तिष्ठन्तं परमेश्वरम्।
विनश्यत्स्वविनश्यन्तं यः पश्यति स पश्यति।।
samaṁ sarveṣu bhūteṣu tiṣṭhantaṁ parameśvaram vinaśyatsv avinaśyantaṁ yaḥ paśyati sa paśyati
"One who sees the Supreme Lord dwelling equally in all beings, the imperishable within the perishable, that one truly sees."
The test of vision: do you see the same divine presence in everyone? Bodies perish but the Lord within is imperishable. Seeing this unity in diversity is true sight.
