catur-vidhā bhajante māṁ janāḥ sukṛtino 'rjuna ārto jijñāsur arthārthī jñānī ca bharatarṣabha
"Four kinds of virtuous people worship Me, O Arjuna: the distressed, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth, and the wise."
What This Means:
Four types come to God: (1) those in distress wanting relief, (2) curious seekers wanting knowledge, (3) those wanting material success, and (4) the wise who know the truth. All are 'sukritinah'—virtuous—because they turn to God.
Going Deeper:
Even seeking God for material reasons is better than not seeking at all. The seeker of wealth who prays is closer to truth than the proud self-sufficient person. Any door into relationship with the Divine is valid.
How To Apply This:
Don't judge your spiritual motivation too harshly. If you came to spirituality seeking peace, success, or relief from suffering—that's fine! The important thing is you came. Motivation can mature over time.
