antavanta ime dehā nityasyoktāḥ śarīriṇaḥ anāśino 'prameyasya tasmād yudhyasva bhārata
"The body is perishable, but the soul dwelling within is eternal, indestructible, and immeasurable. Therefore, O Arjuna, fight!"
What This Means:
Krishna draws the practical conclusion: Bodies are going to end anyway—that's their nature. But the soul within never ends. Understanding this, why hesitate? Fight! You cannot kill what cannot be killed.
Going Deeper:
This is the first of Krishna's 'therefore, fight!' conclusions. The logic is clear: if the soul is eternal (nitya), indestructible (anashina), and beyond measurement (aprameya), then death is an illusion. Arjuna's grief is based on a misunderstanding of what death actually is.
How To Apply This:
When you understand deeply that you are not the body, you can act with courage. Fear of physical harm, fear of death, fear of failure—all these diminish. You're free to do what's right because the real you cannot be threatened.
