Gita 18.35
यया स्वप्नं भयं शोकं विषादं मदमेव च। न विमुञ्चति दुर्मेधा धृतिः सा पार्थ तामसी॥

yayā svapnaṁ bhayaṁ śokaṁ viṣādaṁ madam eva ca na vimuñcati durmedhā dhṛtiḥ sā pārtha tāmasī

"The fortitude by which a fool does not give up excess sleep, fear, grief, depression, and arrogance—that, O Partha, is tamasic."

What This Means:

Tamasic fortitude is the stubborn clinging to sleep, fear, sadness, despair, and pride. It's the 'willpower' that keeps you stuck in negative states.

Going Deeper:

'Durmedha' (dull-witted, fool) characterizes the tamasic person. The five things clung to - 'svapna' (excess sleep/fantasy), 'bhaya' (fear), 'shoka' (grief), 'vishada' (depression), 'mada' (arrogance) - represent darkness. Tamasic dhriti is perverse persistence in harmful states, refusing to change. It takes willpower to stay depressed when help is available.

How To Apply This:

Notice what negative states you stubbornly maintain. Sometimes we perversely cling to our suffering, fears, or pride. That's tamasic willpower misapplied.
