Gita 18.28
अयुक्तः प्राकृतः स्तब्धः शठो नैष्कृतिकोऽलसः। विषादी दीर्घसूत्री च कर्ता तामस उच्यते॥

ayuktaḥ prākṛtaḥ stabdhaḥ śaṭho naiṣkṛtiko 'lasaḥ viṣādī dīrgha-sūtrī ca kartā tāmasa ucyate

"The agent who is undisciplined, vulgar, stubborn, deceitful, malicious, lazy, despondent, and procrastinating—is called tamasic."

What This Means:

A tamasic doer is uncontrolled, crude, rigid, dishonest, spiteful, lazy, depressed, and always putting things off. They lack the energy and clarity for right action.

Going Deeper:

Eight qualities define the tamasic agent: 'Ayukta' - undisciplined, disconnected; 'Prakrita' - vulgar, uncultured; 'Stabdha' - obstinate, rigid; 'Shatha' - deceitful; 'Naishkritika' - malicious, causing others' ruin; 'Alasa' - lazy; 'Vishadi' - despondent; 'Dirgha-sutri' - procrastinating (literally 'long-threaded'). This paints a picture of darkness and dysfunction.

How To Apply This:

If you recognize procrastination, dishonesty, laziness, or chronic negativity in yourself, acknowledge the tamasic influence. The first step out is honest self-assessment.
