Gita 18.1
अर्जुन उवाच संन्यासस्य महाबाहो तत्त्वमिच्छामि वेदितुम्। त्यागस्य च हृषीकेश पृथक्केशिनिषूदन॥

arjuna uvāca sannyāsasya mahā-bāho tattvam icchāmi veditum tyāgasya ca hṛṣīkeśa pṛthak keśi-niṣūdana

"Arjuna said: O mighty-armed one, I wish to understand the truth about renunciation (sannyasa) and about relinquishment (tyaga), O Hrishikesha, O slayer of Keshi."

What This Means:

Arjuna asks Krishna to explain the difference between two types of giving up - sannyasa (complete renunciation of actions) and tyaga (giving up the fruits of actions).

Going Deeper:

This question reflects Arjuna's maturity. After hearing 17 chapters, he seeks final clarity on the practical path. Sannyasa traditionally means renouncing all actions, while tyaga means performing actions without attachment. The three names used for Krishna (Mahabaho, Hrishikesha, Keshinisudhana) suggest Arjuna recognizes Krishna's power, mastery over senses, and ability to slay demons of confusion.

How To Apply This:

Before making major life decisions, seek clarity on the underlying principles. Don't confuse external renunciation with internal detachment - both have their place.

Key Sanskrit Terms:

Sannyasa= complete renunciation of actionsTyaga= relinquishment of fruits of actionsHrishikesha= master of the senses
