7 / 28
Gita 17.7
आहारस्त्वपि सर्वस्य त्रिविधो भवति प्रियः। यज्ञस्तपस्तथा दानं तेषां भेदमिमं श्रृणु॥

āhāras tv api sarvasya tri-vidho bhavati priyaḥ yajñas tapas tathā dānaṁ teṣāṁ bhedam imaṁ śṛṇu

"Food also, which is dear to all, is of three kinds; so too sacrifice, austerity, and charity. Hear their distinctions."

What This Means:

Even the food people prefer is of three types (sattvic, rajasic, tamasic). So are sacrifice, austerity, and charity. Krishna will now explain the distinctions.

Going Deeper:

'Āhāraḥ api trividhaḥ priyaḥ'—even food preference is threefold. What you're drawn to eat reveals your nature. 'Yajña, tapas, dānam'—sacrifice, austerity, and charity are also threefold. Every human activity can be classified by guna. 'Teṣām bhedam śṛṇu'—hear their distinctions. The chapter will systematically analyze each.

How To Apply This:

The guna framework applies to all life domains—food choices, spiritual practices, charitable giving. Use this as a diagnostic tool: what's the quality of my eating, my worship, my giving?

Key Sanskrit Terms:

āhāraḥ= foodyajñaḥ= sacrificetapas= austeritydānam= charity
