Gita 17.2
श्रीभगवानुवाच। त्रिविधा भवति श्रद्धा देहिनां सा स्वभावजा। सात्त्विकी राजसी चैव तामसी चेति तां श्रृणु॥

śrī-bhagavān uvāca tri-vidhā bhavati śraddhā dehināṁ sā svabhāva-jā sāttvikī rājasī caiva tāmasī ceti tāṁ śṛṇu

"The Blessed Lord said: Threefold is the faith of embodied beings, born of their nature—sattvic, rajasic, and tamasic. Hear about it."

What This Means:

Krishna answers: Faith comes in three types based on a person's inherent nature—sattvic (pure), rajasic (passionate), or tamasic (dark). Listen to the explanation.

Going Deeper:

'Trividhā bhavati śraddhā'—faith is threefold. 'Svabhāva-jā'—born of one's own nature (accumulated tendencies from past). Everyone has faith in something—the question is its quality. Faith isn't just religious belief but the deep convictions that shape choices. These convictions are colored by the dominant guna in one's makeup.

How To Apply This:

What you deeply believe shapes who you are. Your faith—in material success, in pleasure, in truth—reflects your dominant guna. Examine your deepest motivations to understand your spiritual condition.
