Chapter 17: Three Types of Faith

19 / 28
Gita 17.19
मूढग्राहेणात्मनो यत्पीडया क्रियते तपः। परस्योत्सादनार्थं वा तत्तामसमुदाहृतम्॥

mūḍha-grāheṇātmano yat pīḍayā kriyate tapaḥ parasyotsādanārthaṁ vā tat tāmasam udāhṛtam

"Austerity performed with foolish obstinacy, with self-torture, or to destroy another—that is declared tamasic."

What This Means:

Austerity done with deluded stubbornness, involving self-torture, or aimed at harming others—is tamasic. This is perversion of spiritual practice.

Going Deeper:

'Mūḍha-grāheṇa'—with foolish obstinacy (clinging to wrong understanding). 'Ātmanaḥ pīḍayā'—with self-torture. 'Parasya utsādana-artham'—for destroying another (black magic, curses). 'Tāmasam'—tamasic. This is the corruption of austerity into either masochism or weapon. True tapas harms no one.

How To Apply This:

If your spiritual practice harms yourself or aims to harm others, stop immediately. This includes harsh self-judgment, dangerous fasting, or 'praying against' someone. True practice heals, never harms.
