vidhi-hīnam asṛṣṭānnaṁ mantra-hīnam adakṣiṇam śraddhā-virahitaṁ yajñaṁ tāmasaṁ paricakṣate
"Sacrifice without proper rites, without food distribution, without mantras, without gifts, and devoid of faith—that is declared tamasic."
What This Means:
Sacrifice that lacks proper procedure, doesn't include sharing food with others, omits sacred words, gives no gifts to the worthy, and has no faith behind it—this is tamasic.
Going Deeper:
Five deficiencies of tamasic sacrifice: (1) vidhi-hīnam—without proper method, (2) asṛṣṭa-annam—without distributing food (charity), (3) mantra-hīnam—without sacred mantras, (4) adakṣiṇam—without gifts/fees (to priests, teachers), (5) śraddhā-virahitam—devoid of faith. Tamasic worship is mechanical, incomplete, heartless—going through motions without meaning.
How To Apply This:
Empty ritual without heart is worse than no ritual. If you worship, bring your full attention and faith. Better to worship simply with devotion than elaborately without it.
