śarīraṁ yad avāpnoti yac cāpy utkrāmatīśvaraḥ gṛhītvaitāni saṁyāti vāyur gandhān ivāśayāt
"When the lord of the body acquires or leaves a body, it takes these along and goes, as the wind carries scents from their source."
What This Means:
When the soul enters a new body (birth) or leaves one (death), it carries the mind and senses along—like wind carrying fragrances from flowers. The soul travels with its mental impressions.

'Yat śarīram avāpnoti'—whichever body it acquires. 'Yat utkrāmati'—from whichever it departs. 'Īśvaraḥ'—the lord (the soul as master of body). 'Gṛhītvā etāni saṁyāti'—taking these (mind and senses) it goes. 'Vāyuḥ gandhān iva āśayāt'—like wind carrying scents from their source. The subtle body (sukshma sharira) travels with the soul, carrying impressions (samskaras) to the next life.
