Gita 14.8
तमस्त्वज्ञानजं विद्धि मोहनं सर्वदेहिनाम्। प्रमादालस्यनिद्राभिस्तन्निबध्नाति भारत॥

tamas tv ajñāna-jaṁ viddhi mohanaṁ sarva-dehinām pramādālasya-nidrābhis tan nibadhnāti bhārata

"But know tamas to be born of ignorance, deluding all embodied beings; it binds by negligence, laziness, and sleep, O Bharata."

What This Means:

Tamas is born from ignorance and creates delusion in everyone. It binds through carelessness, laziness, and excessive sleep—all forms of unconsciousness that keep us from truth.

Going Deeper:

'Ajñāna-jam'—born of ignorance (avidya). 'Mohanam sarva-dehinām'—deluding all embodied beings. 'Pramāda'—negligence, carelessness, living unconsciously. 'Ālasya'—laziness, avoiding effort. 'Nidrā'—sleep (not just physical but mental dullness). Tamas covers awareness with darkness; life is lived mechanically without consciousness.

How To Apply This:

Notice when you're escaping through sleep, food, entertainment—avoiding what needs attention. Tamas manifests as procrastination, denial, and mental fog. Combat it with conscious activity and alert engagement.
