sattvāt sañjāyate jñānaṁ rajaso lobha eva ca pramāda-mohau tamaso bhavato 'jñānam eva ca
"From sattva arises knowledge; from rajas, greed; from tamas arise negligence and delusion, and also ignorance."
What This Means:
Knowledge is born from sattva. Greed is born from rajas. Negligence, delusion, and ignorance are born from tamas. Your mental state determines what grows in you.
Going Deeper:
Direct consequences: 'sattvāt jñānam'—from sattva, knowledge arises naturally. 'Rajasaḥ lobhaḥ'—from rajas, greed (the wanting nature). 'Tamasaḥ pramāda-mohau ajñānam'—from tamas, negligence, delusion, and ignorance. Cultivation of sattva naturally produces wisdom; no force needed. Knowledge doesn't come from rajas or tamas.
How To Apply This:
If you want knowledge, cultivate sattva through pure food, good company, sacred study, and ethical living. Trying to gain wisdom while living rajasically or tamasically is like trying to grow flowers in toxic soil.
