"Of these, the lower knowledge is the Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, Atharva Veda, phonetics, ritual, grammar, etymology, meter, and astronomy. The higher is that by which the Imperishable is realized."

What This Means:

Lower knowledge includes all the Vedas and their auxiliary sciences. Higher knowledge is direct realization of the Imperishable Brahman.

Going Deeper:

This is revolutionary: even the sacred Vedas are "lower" knowledge! They prepare the mind but don't directly reveal Brahman.

How To Apply This:

Don't mistake preparation for realization. Study is important, but knowing about something isn't the same as knowing it directly.
