""Just as one cannot catch the various sounds of a drum being beaten, but by grasping the drum or the drummer, the sounds are grasped.""

What This Means:

You can't catch all the sounds of a drum individually. But grasp the drum or drummer - all sounds are grasped.

Going Deeper:

The analogy: chase individual things (sounds) and fail. Grasp the source (Self) and all effects are known.

How To Apply This:

Stop chasing effects. Grasp the cause - the Self - and all effects are included.
