Chapter 16: Divine and Demonic Natures
Krishna contrasts two types of people: those with divine qualities (daivi sampad) and those with demonic qualities (asuri sampad). This isn't about supernatural beings, it's about human character. Which qualities do you cultivate?
The divine qualities lead to liberation; the demonic lead to bondage. This chapter is a mirror for honest self-examination.

Verse 16.1-3, Divine Qualities
अभयं सत्त्वसंशुद्धिर्ज्ञानयोगव्यवस्थितिः।
दानं दमश्च यज्ञश्च स्वाध्यायस्तप आर्जवम्।।
abhayaṁ sattva-saṁśuddhir jñāna-yoga-vyavasthitiḥ dānaṁ damaś ca yajñaś ca svādhyāyas tapa ārjavam
"Fearlessness, purity of heart, steadfastness in knowledge and yoga, charity, self-control, sacrifice, study, austerity, straightforwardness..."
Krishna lists 26 divine qualities, beginning with fearlessness (abhaya) and purity (sattva-samshuddhi). These qualities lead to liberation and represent the character of a spiritually mature person.
Verse 16.4, Demonic Qualities
दम्भो दर्पोऽभिमानश्च क्रोधः पारुष्यमेव च।
अज्ञानं चाभिजातस्य पार्थ सम्पदमासुरीम्।।
dambho darpo 'bhimānaś ca krodhaḥ pāruṣyam eva ca ajñānaṁ cābhijātasya pārtha sampadam āsurīm
"Hypocrisy, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness, and ignorance, these belong to one born of demonic nature, O Arjuna."
Six demonic qualities: hypocrisy (pretending virtue), arrogance, self-importance, anger, cruelty of speech, and ignorance. These lead to bondage.
Verse 16.21, The Three Gates to Hell
त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मनः।
कामः क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयं त्यजेत्।।
tri-vidhaṁ narakasyedaṁ dvāraṁ nāśanam ātmanaḥ kāmaḥ krodhas tathā lobhas tasmād etat trayaṁ tyajet
"Lust, anger, and greed, these are the three gates to hell, destructive of the self. Therefore, one should abandon these three."
Three enemies destroy the soul: kama (lust/desire), krodha (anger), and lobha (greed). These are the gates through which people fall. They must be abandoned.
