Chapter 8: The Eternal Brahman
What happens at death, and how to prepare
Chapter 8: The Yoga of the Imperishable Brahman
What happens at death? This is one of humanity's deepest questions, and Chapter 8 addresses it directly. Krishna teaches that whatever we think of at the moment of death determines our next destination, and more importantly, that daily practice shapes what we'll think of at that crucial moment.
This chapter also explains cosmic cycles, the vast scales of time in which the universe breathes, and the two paths souls take after death: one leading to return, one to liberation.
Key Verses
Verse 8.5-6, The Thought at Death
अन्तकाले च मामेव स्मरन्मुक्त्वा कलेवरम्।
यः प्रयाति स मद्भावं याति नास्त्यत्र संशयः।।
anta-kāle ca mām eva smaran muktvā kalevaram yaḥ prayāti sa mad-bhāvaṁ yāti nāsty atra saṁśayaḥ
"Whoever, at the time of death, leaves the body remembering Me alone, that person attains My nature. Of this there is no doubt."
The teaching is clear: think of Krishna at death and you attain His nature. But this isn't about forcing a thought at the last second, it's about what your mind naturally goes to under pressure. Death reveals your deepest attachments.
Verse 8.7, Remember Always and Fight
तस्मात्सर्वेषु कालेषु मामनुस्मर युध्य च।
मय्यर्पितमनोबुद्धिर्मामेवैष्यस्यसंशयम्।।
tasmāt sarveṣu kāleṣu mām anusmara yudhya ca mayy arpita-mano-buddhir mām evaiṣyasy asaṁśayam
"Therefore, at all times remember Me and fight. With mind and intellect surrendered to Me, you will certainly come to Me, have no doubt."
The practical instruction: remember Krishna at ALL times, not just at death. And don't stop working, "yudhya" (fight, do your duty). Constant remembrance with action ensures the right consciousness at death.
Verse 8.14, Easily Attained
अनन्यचेताः सततं यो मां स्मरति नित्यशः।
तस्याहं सुलभः पार्थ नित्ययुक्तस्य योगिनः।।
ananya-cetāḥ satataṁ yo māṁ smarati nityaśaḥ tasyāhaṁ sulabhaḥ pārtha nitya-yuktasya yoginaḥ
"For one who remembers Me without deviation, constantly and daily, I am easy to attain, O Arjuna, for such an ever-connected yogi."
Beautiful reassurance: Krishna is EASY to attain for those who remember Him constantly. Not difficult, easy. The complication is in our distraction, not in divine distance.
Verse 8.21, The Supreme Destination
अव्यक्तोऽक्षर इत्युक्तस्तमाहुः परमां गतिम्।
यं प्राप्य न निवर्तन्ते तद्धाम परमं मम।।
avyakto 'kṣara ity uktas tam āhuḥ paramāṁ gatim yaṁ prāpya na nivartante tad dhāma paramaṁ mama
"That unmanifest is called the Imperishable, they call it the supreme destination. Those who attain it never return. That is My supreme abode."
Beyond even the cycles of cosmic creation and dissolution, there's a realm from which souls never return. This is Krishna's supreme abode, the ultimate destination of the spiritual journey.
