Failed peace, gathering armies, and the eve of destruction
The Gathering Storm
After thirteen years of exile, the Pandavas emerge. They've fulfilled every condition. They want only what's rightfully theirs. But Duryodhana's reply, "not even land enough to stick a needle in", makes war inevitable.
Choosing Sides
Both sides begin recruiting allies. The entire known world takes sides:
With the Pandavas: Krishna (as advisor, not warrior), the Panchalas, the Yadavas, King Virata, and others who believe in their cause
With the Kauravas: Eleven akshauhinis (massive army divisions), including Bhishma, Drona, Karna, and most established kingdoms
On paper, the Kauravas are stronger. They have more soldiers, more allies, and the greatest warriors of the age (Bhishma, Drona, Karna). But the Pandavas have Krishna, and through him, divine favor.
The Final Peace Attempt
Before war, Krishna himself goes as ambassador to Hastinapura. He offers terms: return Indraprastha, and there will be peace. He even offers to accept just five villages.
Duryodhana refuses everything. Worse, he attempts to capture Krishna, which fails spectacularly when Krishna reveals his cosmic form, terrifying the entire court.
Peace has failed. War is set for the fields of Kurukshetra.
The Night Before Battle
The two armies face each other across the plain. Millions of soldiers. Countless elephants, horses, chariots. Brothers, teachers, students, friends, arrayed against each other.
Arjuna asks Krishna to drive his chariot between the armies so he can see who he must fight. He sees Bhishma, who held him as a child. Drona, who taught him archery. Cousins, uncles, friends.
His bow slips from his hands. He cannot fight.
"My limbs give way, my mouth is parched, my body trembles, my hair stands on end... I see no good in killing my own kinsmen in battle."
This crisis, Arjuna's paralysis, Krishna's response, precipitates the Bhagavad Gita. We'll study that profound teaching in Level 3.
The Stage Is Set
Everything has led to this moment:
- A cursed dynasty's unresolved tensions
- Two sets of cousins who cannot coexist
- The humiliation of Draupadi demanding vengeance
- Failed diplomacy and refused compromises
- The greatest warriors of the age choosing sides
The conch shells sound. The war begins.
