yato yato niścarati manaś cañcalam asthiram tatas tato niyamyaitad ātmany eva vaśaṁ nayet
"Wherever the restless, unsteady mind wanders, from there let one restrain it and bring it back under the control of the Self alone."
What This Means:
The mind is restless and unstable—it will wander. Wherever it goes, bring it back. Again and again, return it to the Self. This is the practice: endless gentle redirection.
Going Deeper:
Chanchala (restless) and asthira (unsteady) honestly describe the untrained mind. Krishna doesn't say stop the wandering; he says 'tata tata' (from there, from there)—wherever it goes, bring it back. The practice is in the returning, not in never wandering.
How To Apply This:
This is the heart of meditation instruction. Don't be discouraged by wandering—it's expected. Success isn't a mind that never wanders; it's a mind that keeps coming back. Each return strengthens the capacity.
