niyataṁ kuru karma tvaṁ karma jyāyo hy akarmaṇaḥ śarīra-yātrāpi ca te na prasiddhyed akarmaṇaḥ
"Perform your prescribed duties, for action is better than inaction. Even the maintenance of your body would not be possible through inaction."
What This Means:
Just do your duty! Action is better than inaction—period. You can't even keep your body alive without action. You have to eat, which requires getting food, which requires work. The fantasy of total inaction is exactly that—a fantasy.
Going Deeper:
'Niyata karma' means prescribed or obligatory duty—the actions that come with your role and position in life. Krishna isn't asking Arjuna to do random acts; he's asking him to fulfill his specific duty as a warrior. Everyone has their niyata karma based on their situation.
How To Apply This:
What is your 'niyata karma' right now? As a student, study. As a parent, care for your children. As an employee, do your job. As a human, maintain your body and mind. Start with your obvious duties before seeking exotic spiritual practices. The basics are the foundation.
