Gita 3.27
प्रकृतेः क्रियमाणानि गुणैः कर्माणि सर्वशः। अहङ्कारविमूढात्मा कर्ताहमिति मन्यते।।

prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ ahaṅkāra-vimūḍhātmā kartāham iti manyate

"All actions are performed by the gunas of material nature. One whose mind is deluded by ego thinks, 'I am the doer.'"

What This Means:

In reality, it's nature (prakriti) doing everything through its three qualities (gunas). Your body, mind, and personality are nature. But the ego creates the illusion: 'I am doing this.' This false identification is the root of bondage.

Going Deeper:

This is a profound teaching on the mechanics of action. The true Self (Atman) is the witness, not the actor. All action happens through prakriti and its gunas. 'Ahamkara-vimudhatma' (soul deluded by ego) describes our condition: we've identified with the body-mind and think its actions are 'ours.' This misidentification creates karma.

How To Apply This:

Notice how your body acts almost on its own—digestion, heartbeat, reflexes. Even 'your' decisions emerge from brain processes you didn't consciously create. The sense of 'I am doing' is added after the fact. Watch actions happen and notice: is there really a 'you' doing them, or is nature doing nature?
