iṣṭān bhogān hi vo devā dāsyante yajña-bhāvitāḥ tair dattān apradāyaibhyo yo bhuṅkte stena eva saḥ
"The gods, pleased by sacrifice, will give you the enjoyments you desire. But one who enjoys what is given without offering anything in return is truly a thief."
What This Means:
When you participate in the cosmic exchange (yajna), you receive what you need. But if you just take without giving back, you're stealing. Strong words! The person who only consumes without contributing is literally called a thief.
Going Deeper:
This verse has social implications. Everyone receives from society—education, infrastructure, protection, knowledge passed down through generations. To take all this without contributing is theft. 'Stena eva sah' (he is verily a thief) applies to anyone who only extracts value without adding it.
How To Apply This:
Look at what you take from the world: clean water, electricity, roads, food, entertainment, knowledge. What are you giving back? If the balance is heavily toward taking, something needs to shift. Contribute to the systems that support you. Otherwise, you're living as a thief.
