kāmātmānaḥ svarga-parā janma-karma-phala-pradām kriyā-viśeṣa-bahulāṁ bhogaiśvarya-gatiṁ prati
"Full of desires, with heaven as their highest goal, they perform elaborate rituals aimed at pleasure, power, and better births—leading only to more rebirth."
What This Means:
These ritualists are full of desires: they want heaven, wealth, power, and a good rebirth. So they perform complex ceremonies to get these things. But here's the problem—all this just keeps them spinning in the cycle of rebirth. They get what they want, but miss liberation.
Going Deeper:
The rituals Krishna describes (karma-kanda) are not wrong—they're incomplete. They give results (better births, heavenly pleasures) but these results are temporary. The performer remains bound by karma, endlessly cycling through births. The goal should be moksha (liberation), not svarga (heaven).
How To Apply This:
What are you really working toward? If all your efforts are aimed at better circumstances—more money, higher status, more comfort—you're on the treadmill. These things aren't bad, but if they're your ultimate goal, you'll never find lasting peace. Aim higher: inner transformation, not just outer improvement.
