viṣayendriya-saṁyogād yat tad agre 'mṛtopamam pariṇāme viṣam iva tat sukhaṁ rājasaṁ smṛtam
"That happiness which arises from the contact of senses with objects, which is like nectar in the beginning but like poison in the end—that is remembered as rajasic."
What This Means:
Rajasic happiness comes from sense pleasures - it seems wonderful at first but turns poisonous over time. Think of addiction, overindulgence, or unhealthy attachments.
Going Deeper:
'Vishaya-indriya-samyoga' - the union of senses with sense objects - is the source. This happiness is immediate ('agre amritopamam') but degrades ('pariname visham iva'). Examples include substance addiction, lustful relationships, excessive eating - delightful initially, destructive eventually. The reversal of the sattvic pattern is exact and instructive.
How To Apply This:
When something feels amazing immediately with no effort, be cautious. Ask: What will this feel like in a year? In ten years? Instant gratification often leads to long-term regret.
