adhiṣṭhānaṁ tathā kartā karaṇaṁ ca pṛthag-vidham vividhāś ca pṛthak ceṣṭā daivaṁ caivātra pañcamam
"The body (seat of action), the doer, the various instruments, the many kinds of efforts, and divine providence as the fifth—these are the five factors."
What This Means:
Five things make any action possible: (1) the body as the base, (2) the individual soul as the doer, (3) the senses and organs as instruments, (4) the various efforts made, and (5) divine will or fate.
Going Deeper:
Adhishthana (body) provides the platform. Karta (doer) is the individual self with its sense of agency. Karana (instruments) includes sense organs, motor organs, and mind. Cheshta (efforts) are the vital forces and movements. Daiva (providence) represents cosmic forces, past karma, and grace. No action occurs without all five cooperating.
How To Apply This:
Before taking credit or blame for outcomes, remember these five factors. Your effort is only one of five components. This isn't fatalism—it's accurate understanding.
